Brazil: Judge Suspends Awarding of Dam Contracts

A federal judge on Wednesday suspended an auction scheduled for April 20 to award construction contracts for a huge hydroelectric dam in the Amazon that environmentalists say would devastate indigenous communities along the Xingu River, according to a court Web site. The judge, Antonio Carlos Almeida Campelo, agreed with a federal prosecutor in Para State, who argued that awarding the contracts would violate environmental laws. The project has attracted worldwide attention from nongovernmental organizations and celebrities, including the director James Cameron, who have tried to draw attention to the dam’s potential negative impact. Mr. Cameron said Wednesday that he remained committed to stopping the dam.
